What exactly is DRM and why do the questions have to be 20 words long?

Hi! I’ve been looking at a lot of computer games that have recently been released and many of them are receiving exceptionally poor reviews because of the inclusion of DRM. I know that this prevents people from installing the game on a certain amount of computers but what exactly is it? Also, is it true that this can give your computer spyware? Finally, why do game companies insist on including this feature if they know that their customers hate it? Thanks!

    DRM = Digital Rights Management

    Games such as SPORE have so much DRM on them that they become so much of a hassle it isn’t worth it.

    Yes, in the past Sony (don’t think just because it is a good name that they can be trusted) has been busted hiding root kits in CDs
    See:

    Basically DRM punishes the legitimate users, while only stopping the hackers cracking the games for an extra week or so.
